Off Stage Highlights 2014
Great Pako Festa Street Parade
Listen to the roving buskers and street entertainment along Pakington Street as you enjoy the tastes of the world!
Great Pako Festa Street Parade: At 11am the great Pako Festa Parade commences with a colourful stream of cultural and community floats, groups, entertainers, Channel 7 stars and brass bands. Starting at Waratah Street and then travelling along Pakington Street the parade embodies diversity, dynamism and colorfulness, and above all else cooperation, creativity and the promotion of our humanity. Pako Festa sends a strong message in these troubled times in which we live: our preparedness to interact with, work with and treat each other with dignity and respect demolishes the walls of division and conflicts; bringing everyone together in a spirit of understanding, acceptance and celebration of life itself.
Street Activity: From 9am, the street starts to fill with people who come to browse through the eclectic range of stalls selling everything from ethnic fashion to fairy wings. There are brilliant buskers, a smorgasbord of cultural and local foods and a string of roving street performer’s intent on keeping you smiling. With well over 200 retail and food outlets in Pakington Street there is no excuse to not find a bargain and food to satisfy the soul!
(Check our Food Galore section for the full listing of cultural food on offer)
Around midday, as the parade ends join us in West Park for the official opening of the event. Then over the course of the afternoon and into the evening, stay on as the street pulses to the beat of back-to-back performances across a number of world music stages. Hundreds of performers from a myriad of multicultural backgrounds present traditional and modern music, dance and song. As well as introducing members from some of our newest local communities, the event continues to attract local community groups who haven’t missed a single festival since 1983!
Diversitat Pako Festa prides itself as being a free event; it is also “access friendly” allowing people of all abilities to share the enriching experience of multiculturalism. All you need to enjoy Pako Festa is a happy heart and an open mind.
